The 18th of January 2018 marked the start of a unique journey where the African Intellectual Property and innovation story is told by Africans themselves. The project was launched through a Facebook Live broadcast in Dubai which featured two IP Experts from Zimbabwe namely Miss Brenda Matanga, Managing Partner at BMatanga IP Attorneys and current President of Zimbabwe Institute of Patents and Trademark Agents and Mr Moses Nkomo, Senior Partner at Donsa-Nkomo & Mutangi IP Attorneys who is also an Intellectual Property Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe. The pair had attended the just ended IIPLA 4th Dubai IP Congress and World IP Forum respectively as panelists and Resource Persons.
The inaugural live broadcast set a foundation of a seemingly interesting and engaging dialogue on intellectual property and related issues in Africa. A number of issues were discussed during the live broadcast the key ones being the current status of intellectual property laws in Africa and the perception of the outside world regarding the current status, the challenges as well as the recommendations for the way forward. The panelists also put up a challenge to fellow African Experts to tell a positive story about the African continent as more resident African Experts are expected to feature on AfricanLaw regular live broadcasts as Resource Persons.
